Day 7: Around Rotorua

Forward to Day 8
Back to Day 6

We had a long drive to Gisborne before us today, but Rotorua is such a fascinating place we had to do some sight-seeing before left. Rotorua is a very volcanic region and it has been a tourist spot for a long time because of the hot springs.

We took a walking tour of the city, and our first stop was Kuirau Park in the city center. In this park, we saw the most interesting hot spring activity of our whole trip, and it was free! Unfortunately, because of the steam rising everywhere, it is very difficult to get a good picture. These were both taken next to a pond with boiling mud at it's bottom.

These were taken at the second stop on our walking tour, at the Maori village of Ohinemutu.

Our first black swan sighting, in Lake Rotorua.

The last stop on our walking tour was the Government Gardens. The spectacular building behind us is now a museum. It used to be a Bath House that was built in 1908.

More photos from the Government Gardens.

Views of the Blue and Green Lakes to the south of Rotorua.

On the shores of Lake Tarawera, near Rotorua.

On the shore near Whakatane (pronouced "Fa-ka-TA-nee").

The river at the bottom of the gorge that we followed to Gisborne.
