Day 10: Around Napier
Forward to Day 11
Back to Day 9
We left Lake Waikaremoana early to go to Napier. There was a nice
lake along the way with lovely foliage, and then we reached the ocean
and got an early view of Napier in the distance. The white bluffs
halfway between Ian and the left side of the picture are just below the
Bluff Hill lookout that we visited later.
Napier is a city known for its Art Deco architecture. In 1931 a 7.9
earthquake nearly destroyed it, and the city was almost completely
rebuilt. But we didn't bother with the architecture, we felt like
playing mini-golf instead!
Before the sun set we visited the Bluff Hill lookout for a nice
view of the city and bay. Behind me, way in the distance on the right
half of the picture, you can just make out the stretch of land where
Gisborne is located.
